Information you choose to send
The contact form collects your name, email address and message. You can also identify a related page from this website. The saved record includes the submission date. The related page is stored as its website path, without the query string or fragment.
We use this information to understand the enquiry, handle a website or article issue, and respond where appropriate. Please leave out passwords, payment details, identity documents and sensitive information about another person. You can read the articles without submitting the form, creating a reader account or joining a mailing list.
Connection and security information
Our server and Cloudflare process connection information needed to deliver pages and protect the website. This can include an IP address, requested address, time, browser information and the response sent by the server. Standard access and error logs help investigate faults and abusive traffic. They are handled through routine server log rotation, rather than added to your contact message as a browsing profile.
The form also uses a short-lived, coded value derived from the connection's IP address to limit repeated submissions. That counter is held in application memory for a ten-minute window. The raw IP address is not saved in the contact inbox. A hidden form field helps reject automated spam without requiring a reader account.
Why we use this information
We rely on legitimate interests in operating a secure publication, handling messages that readers choose to send and investigating technical problems. The information used should be limited to what those tasks need. This does not give us a general right to use a message for unrelated marketing.
There are no reader profiles, public comments, newsletters, on-site advertising trackers or analytics tags configured on this website. We do not sell contact messages or use them to make automated decisions about you. A request concerning a legal right may also require us to process information to meet a legal obligation.
Who can access it and for how long
Contact messages are stored in the private website inbox. Only administrator accounts can read it. Messages are handled manually, and the form does not send automatic email notifications. Our hosting and delivery services process technical data needed to run the site; Cloudflare operates an international network, so connection data may be processed outside the UK under its applicable data-transfer arrangements.
Messages are kept for as long as needed to handle the enquiry and relevant follow-up, with deletion managed by the administrator. There is no automatic inbox deletion deadline. You can request deletion through Contact. A deleted record may remain in a protected backup until the rolling 14-day backup cycle replaces it. Backups are used for recovery, not as a second contact list. We may disclose information where a valid legal requirement obliges us to do so.
Ask about your information
You can ask for access to information we hold about you, correction of an inaccurate record, or deletion. You may also be able to object to a particular use, ask us to restrict it, or request a portable copy where that right applies. The outcome depends on the information and the legal basis for using it; these rights are not identical in every situation.
Use Contact, describe the request and give enough detail to locate the message. We may need a proportionate way to confirm that the request is yours. Do not send identity documents with the initial enquiry. We aim to respond without unnecessary delay and normally within one month, subject to the rules for clarification and complex requests. You can also raise a concern with the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK's data protection regulator.
